Key Tags: Areas of Work
Movement for Family Power’s Movement Map invites organizations to tag themselves under seven “areas of work” categories. We know language and terminology can vary, so this key seeks to provide clarity and help ensure alignment around how different types of work are categorized on the Map.
Art & Media. Art and media produced to shift narratives. Examples: podcasts, news and media outlets, art fellowships, and art-based campaigns.
Community Defense. Community-based support outside of court-based attorney work. Examples: court support, court watch, defense of activists, early parent defense support provided by non-attorney advocates, participatory defense, know your rights trainings.
Healing & Wellness. Offerings focused on healing, wellness, and repair. Examples: support groups, peer-led spaces, and holistic care or wellness programs.
Legal Representation. Direct legal services and representation for people being investigated and/or prosecuted by the family policing system or related systems. Examples: family defense, parent defense, and legal advocacy.
Mutual Aid. Directly providing no-strings-attached material and financial support to meet immediate needs. This is not meant to include providing referrals to mutual aid. Examples: community care funds, food distribution, housing support, child care collaboratives, and material aid.
Policy & Advocacy. Efforts to change laws, policies, and practices that harm families. Examples: legislative advocacy and organizing, impact litigation, and policy change efforts.
