Press ON: Movement Journalism201: A Virtual Training

This event is hosted by Press ON.

The workshop will be facilitated by the fantastic Tina Vasquez. Tina is the Features Editor at Prism, the Freedomways Reporting Fellowship Coordinator at Press On and a Southern movement journalist with over 15 years of experience reporting & editing.

Attendees will learn how to sharpen what the industry vaguely refers to as “news judgement.” Considered a core editorial process, how newsrooms discern what is newsworthy is anything but objective. Using the principles of movement journalism, attendees will determine how to hone in on the story they want to tell, examine inventive reporting formats for centering the most impacted, learn creative strategies for safely reaching impacted sources outside of nonprofits and other organizations, and receive training on how to navigate sticky issues that often arise in reporting.

This training is intended for participants who already have an understanding of movement journalism principles & commitments. If you would like to review them, they are broken down in Press On’s Movement Journalism 101 zine.

To ensure the future of our Level Up popular education program, we ask that each registrant make a sliding-scale contribution ($1-$125), but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. English live captioning and language interpretation provided by request. Please name your accessibility needs on the registration form.

Hope to see you there.
