Repeal ASFA

End the Family Death Penalty

The so-called Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) was passed in the 1990’s along with a series of laws, like mandatory minimum sentencing, that were devastating for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and poor white communities. Because of ASFA, state child "welfare" systems across the country now move expeditiously to permanently separate families and terminate the rights of parents to the care and custody of their children. Since ASFA was enacted, more than one million children have been permanently separated from their parents.
