Our Areas of Work

We use movement lawyering principles to center directly impacted people and grassroots activism.

Building out a loving, healthy community with and amongst people working to shrink the Foster system.

Raising social consciousness around the harms of the Foster System and forced family separation to to support the reclaiming and reimagining of Safe and Healthy Families.

Disrupting and curtailing Foster System Pipelines, reducing the level of harm inflicted by forced family separations.

Vision and Values

What we think about social change:

We believe that the existing systems of punishment and control, such as the Foster system are not designed to help families thrive. We believe in a total divestment from the foster system and investment in community. Thus, we will not advocate for reforms that simply recreate systems of surveillance, control and punishment of families.

We believe that systems of oppression are intertwined, and that the foster system is no exception. We are committed to working with our allies across social movements, including but not limited to the fights for reproductive justice, racial justice, criminal justice, economic justice, disability justice, health care justice, drug policy reform, harm reduction, LGBTQI and immigration justice.

We believe that the practice of political study, alongside organizers and community members, to collectively re-imagine a just society is a necessary component to liberation. Supporting a movement, is not theoretical, it is not magic, it is work. It means creating space for disagreement, consensus, as well as being constantly held accountable by those most affected by the social injustice.

Our relationshiP TO people and communities

We believe that building the power of impacted people and communities is critical to creating meaningful, lasting change.

We will work to meaningfully center the leadership of parents and families affected by the Foster System, amplifying their voices, and advancing their political agendas.

We know that the work of changing the system cannot be the burden of affected families alone and that therefore collaboration among those directly affected and other advocates is essential.

As an organization founded and headed by two lawyers, we know we hold relative class privilege, and Lisa holds relative race privilege. We will constantly push ourselves to being held accountable and challenged by families affected who are advocating for change.

Our commitments

We commit to constantly engaging in the process of politically educating ourselves, simultaneously growing, learning and mobilizing. We firmly believe that we must approach this work with equal strength and humility.

We commit to centering people of color, especially Black, Indigenous, and Latinx people in leadership.

We believe that leadership and participation should not be defined or constrained by educational degrees, institutional approval, or socio-economic status. And that those with power should leverage what they have for the greater good. Thus we commit ourselves to disrupting traditional hierarchies within our organization and within the movement. We commit ourselves to dissipating our privilege.

We commit to creating a caring, transparent, respectful, and affirming environment.

We believe in the transformational power of art and non traditional forms of political education, and we commit to being creative and innovative in our activism.
